Winter holidays, well-being guaranteed in the magnificent natural surroundings of the South Tyrol.
Once the summer and autumn hiking seasons are over, the region is transformed into a splendid winter paradise for lovers of snowboarding and skiing, both downhill and cross-country. A wide choice of local pistes includes the Sellaronda in the Dolomites Superski area, the Plose above Bressanone, and the lovely cross-country routes of Alpe di Siusi and the Monte Pana plateau.
There are hundreds of possible snowshoeing routes around the Dolomites, spectacular ski-mountaineering tours, tobogganing pistes on Rasciesa and Alpe di Siusi, and ice rinks where champions like local skating legend Carolina Kostner come to perform.
For romantics we recommend a visit during Advent for the local Christmas markets, while lovers of culture can enjoy the museums of Bolzano, including its natural history museum and the panoramic site of Castel Roncolo, with its year-round programme of exhibitions, concerts, medieval shows and children's workshops. Perhaps the most intriguing exhibit of all is to be found in the archaeological museum, where the story of Ötzi, the ice man, is told in fascinating detail.
